The Encore is Buick’s bestselling model, and for good reason. It’s a small compact SUV that’s packed with power features, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, and options like a heated steering wheel and remote engine start.
Where the Encore model in 2019 has two powertrain options, this has been reduced to one and an all-new Encore GX model is being introduced. The Encore keeps the 138- horsepower engine from last year, which has always been the most popular choice.
When the Encore GX model arrives, it will be a larger model positioned between the Encore and the Enclave.
The 2020 Buick Encore has a single powertrain. This is a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine capable of outputting 130 horsepower and 148 pounds per foot of torque. It’s paired with six-speed automatic transmission.
As standard, the vehicle is front-wheel-drive, but you can opt for all-wheel-drive on all trims besides the 1SV.
The 2020 Buick Encore is efficient, managing 25 miles to the gallon in the city and 30 miles to the gallon on the highway. Despite having a turbocharged engine, the Buick Encore uses regular fuel instead of premium, helping you to save cash at the gas pump.
The 2020 Buick Encore is offered in four trim levels – the base 1SV, the Preferred, the Sport Touring, and the Essence.
The 1SV is a base trim in name only, as it already comes with 18-inch alloys, keyless ignition and entry, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, automatic headlights, air conditioning, roof rails, heated mirrors, cruise control, and a front passenger seat that folds flat.
In the dashboard, you’ll find an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. Bluetooth connectivity comes as standard, and there are two USB ports. There’s a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, a 6-speaker sound system, and a rearview camera.
The Preferred model is similarly equipped but adds a cargo cover and floor mats. More importantly, with the Preferred, you have access to additional safety and security options such as remote start, rear cross-traffic alerts, and blind-spot monitoring. You can also opt for a sunroof on the Preferred, Sport Touring, and Essence models.
The Sport Touring model adds a rear spoiler, foglights, and remote start to the 1SV setup. For the Sport Touring and the Essence, you can opt for a 7-speaker Bose sound system to replace the 6-speaker system.
Topping the range is the Essence, where you get rear cross-traffic alerts, blind-spot monitoring, a 120-volt outlet, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, a driver’s seat with memory settings, heated front seats, leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, and LED headlights.
An additional package for the Essence adds front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, forward collision alert, and automatic wipers.
Buicks have a reputation for their quiet, comfortable cabins, and the 2020 Buick Encore is no exception. The sound-insulating cabin is actually one of the 2020 Buick Encore’s most impressive features, as there’s almost no ambient noise from outside even when the engine is reaching full throttle. The climate control system is excellent and the quality of materials is good.
As a subcompact, the Encore must be smarter with space than larger SUVs. It does a good job, with controls within easy reach and roominess for all. The roof is tall and the dashboard is stretched out, creating a perception of space when you’re sitting in the front seat. The rear seats are optimal for two people.
The NHTSA has given the 2020 Buick Encore a full 5-star rating. Front barrier crash, side crash, and side barrier tests all came back with glowing results, a full 5 out of 5 stars.
The IIHS also gave the 2020 Buick Encore full marks in all safety tests performed, affirming that the latest Encore is a superbly safe ride.
Besides the solid construction, the 2020 Encore has driver assistance features like forward collision warning and blind-spot warning systems. OnStar provides automatic crash notification and roadside assistance.
The 2020 Buick Encore is a practical, economical, stylish subcompact crossover SUV with all the modern tech you could hope for.
